A few months ago I shared my hair journey. <—- Click here for before. The ups and downs, well- mostly downs. Eventually I decided to go back to the root of the matter; go all natural. The idea was to keep trimming once per month until the chemical is completely gone, but what I really wanted was to cut it all off… Everywhere I looked, be it, on the television, magazines or in person. All the women I saw with low natural hair all looked fantastic. Just the bit of motivation I needed. So one weekend of bravery, lead to me doing- the big chop… Guess what? I love it! I feel so free. To be honest I do believe I look better with long hair but until it gets to that point, I’m enjoying my new do.
Pay no attention to that pink thing above my head. I have no idea what it is.

BEAUTIFUL! I remember when I cut my hair off 12 years ago. It has grown back the healthiest of my life. And if I want to wear it straight, I just get a brazillian blow out that last 3 weeks. Good luck with your beautiful hair!

When you do the blow out, you won’t need much heat. I flat iron mine on low.

I did a big chop once when I was in college. A few years later I relaxed it again, then went natural again and am natural now. If this is your first time…hang in there – it only gets better!

Hey! Congratulations! I miss being natural. I’m just sitting here, twittling my thumbs til this wears off. Then it’s back to au naturale.com. lol. My debate is, should I keep it shoulder length or cut it? I’m actually liking the length, but I miss the convenience of short hair. Sigh. But, enjoy the joys of being natural! I recommend using olive oil serum just because. I like Africa’s Best and Organics.

You are so beautiful Shian. That’s a recent photo? It’s growing back fast I think!
I used to keep my hair trimmed down with a number 2 attachment on the clippers. Not sure if you’ve seen how I am now, but it’s much longer lol. I’m sure the day will come when I go back to the care-free short hair again.

Hi
. I did a BC in 2005 July and haven’t regretted it either. I just did a chopping of my locs last Tuesday and a part of me is regretting that. Hair is so fraught with baggage. I can’t even begin to explain that. Thanks for writing.

You look great! It’s funny I wanted to go back to mi roots…and my roots is, I am a black woman. Adding chemical is just not how we made ( this is my opinion lolz) therefore with pern and all I locked my hair and I love it. I feel even more connected to my beginings and get alot more respect. I cannot explain now, but it feels out of this world…plus hubby loves it. Great post Shian, I enjoyed reading.

I actually visited your blog because you liked my latest blog post (Torn) though I had no idea how you found it (how *did* you find my blog btw?? would love to know). And lo and behold I stumble across another black woman dealing with the big chop! I’m planning to do it this summer. I’ve had my hair in braids for about 8 months and I’ve got 4 more months before I go home for a wedding. I plan to do up that wedding in a wee Afro. I’m excited and scared all at the same time but I can’t wait to see what my hair is like all natural! You rock it girl!!

I did the BC in June of 2011. I was so scared, but I realized that I want to be the kind of woman who does what her heart desires, regardless of what anyone else thinks. I’m a mom and I plan on being a good example of womanhood for my girls. I did it, and I love it. My problem now: I want it long, but I love it short, so I keep cutting it. My next phase of the journey: let it grow (lol). You’ll do fine. Just remember to be true to you and be patient. It’s hard figuring out which products are really for your hair. Good luck! (and thanks for visiting my blog)
